Our Vision for Mathematics at Churcham

Mathematics at Churcham Primary School empowers pupils to become confident, resilient and curious thinkers. We believe every child is capable of deepening their mathematical understanding through perseverance, courage and high‑quality teaching. Our curriculum nurtures each child’s unique strengths, celebrates their progress and builds secure foundations for future learning.

We create a learning environment where pupils feel valued, respected and motivated to succeed. Through responsive practice, collaborative support and carefully sequenced teaching, pupils develop strong mathematical mindsets and a positive “can‑do” attitude.

Mathematics prepares pupils for life beyond school by equipping them with essential skills, real‑world problem‑solving strategies and the confidence to reason and think logically.

INTENT

Our mastery‑based Mathematics curriculum ensures pupils develop secure, deep understanding of mathematical concepts through manageable steps and rich learning experiences.

We aim for pupils to:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics

  • Recall and apply knowledge rapidly, accurately and confidently

  • Solve problems in increasingly sophisticated and unfamiliar contexts

  • Reason mathematically using precise language, justifications and proofs

  • Develop strong appreciation of number and number operations

  • Build efficient mental and written calculation strategies

  • Grow as resilient, reflective and motivated mathematicians

IMPLEMENTATION

Mathematical mastery is built through understanding why and how, not just answering quickly. Pupils follow a carefully sequenced approach using concrete, pictorial and abstract representations to build secure conceptual understanding.

Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving

Our teaching follows the structure:

  • Fluency (Do it): developing number sense, facts, formulas and efficient methods

  • Reasoning (Secure it): applying logical thinking, explaining strategies and justifying answers

  • Problem Solving (Deepen it): tackling unfamiliar problems using taught strategies

Problem‑solving strategies include working systematically, visualising, identifying patterns, reasoning conclusions, working backwards and trial and error.

Curriculum Structure

Mathematics is taught daily using our adapted White Rose Maths scheme. To enrich learning, we use:

  • Planpanion (formerly Deepening Understanding)

  • CGP resources

  • A wide range of reasoning materials

Lessons focus on key skills such as place value, the four operations and fractions. Pupils use varied representations including bar models, part‑whole models, number sentences, verbal explanations and manipulatives.

  • Pre‑teaching of skills and vocabulary

  • Scaffolded tasks and targeted adult support

  • Visual supports and manipulatives

  • Chunked instruction and time for questioning

  • Consistent use of Do it, Secure it, Deepen it language

  • High‑quality mathematical terminology

  • Exposure to reasoning and problem‑solving questions

  • Pupils write in maths books rather than on worksheets

  • Front‑cover sheets outlining learning objectives and vocabulary

  • Maths working walls showing current learning

  • Adults modelling manipulatives linked to learning objectives

Manipulatives

Each class uses a wide range of manipulatives appropriate to age and stage, including:

Class 1 (Reception, Year 1 & 2):
Numicon, tens frames, counters, numberblocks, base 10, shapes, number lines, clocks, fraction walls, measuring tools, money, part‑whole models.

Class 2 (Years 3–6):
Base 10, fraction walls, multilink cubes, counters, place value charts, coins and notes, 2D/3D shapes, measuring scales, compasses, dice, number lines, graph paper, metre sticks, protractors, thermometers.

Daily times tables practice supports fluency in KS2.

IMPACT

The impact of our Mathematics curriculum is monitored through Insight, book looks, lesson observations and pupil voice.

By the end of each year, pupils:

  • Achieve Age‑Related Expectations (ARE), with some reaching Greater Depth (GDS)

  • Become fluent in mathematical fundamentals

  • Apply knowledge rapidly and accurately

  • Solve problems confidently in a range of contexts

  • Reason mathematically using clear justification and precise language

  • Show enthusiasm and pride when discussing their learning

  • Demonstrate resilience, confidence and secure understanding of mathematical concepts

By the end of KS2, pupils leave Churcham as confident, capable mathematicians ready for the next stage of their education.
