Class 1

Welcome to Class 1:

Class 1 is home to our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children. The class teacher is Miss Foylan, supported by Miss Muirhead, our teaching partner.

Children learn in a mix of whole‑class sessions and small, year‑group inputs. At times, all three year groups work together; at other times, children receive focused teaching matched to their stage of learning while others apply skills independently through carefully planned tasks.

Daily Little Wandle phonics lessons provide a consistent and structured approach to early reading. Children also take part in daily English and Maths lessons each morning.

  • In English, we use The Write Stuff to support high‑quality modelling and sentence construction.

  • In Maths, we follow White Rose planning and resources to build secure understanding and fluency.

Every day, children also develop their arithmetic skills through Rainbow Maths, helping them build confidence and accuracy over time.

Reading is a key priority in Class 1. Each child takes part in three group reading sessions every week, using Big Cat phonics books matched to their current reading stage. These books then go home, alongside an individual reading book, to strengthen fluency and enjoyment.

Afternoons centre on cross-curricular subjects with each term having a key topic question to explore.

Class 1 have P.E every Tuesday and Friday afternoon and these sessions are delivered by a specialist sports coach.

We visit the school library every week and we enjoy sharing books together during this time. We also take 2 books home a week and these books are then shared with our families at home.

In Class 1, we have a rolling programme that teachers plan from (please see the document to find out more about this).

Please read the parent leaflet for more information on our current topics and you will also find some ideas on how to support your child at home.

We set Maths/English homework every Wednesday which is then due in on a Monday. A set of spellings are also sent home on a Wednesday, the children will then be tested on the spellings on the following Monday.

Class teachers update the Class Dojo on a regular basis. Any information about homework or class updates will be posted here. Pictures of Class 1 learning are also posted throughout the week.
