Phonics activities to practise at home
For year one and two:
Picnic on pluto- children to read the real and silly words aloud using their phonic knowledge and then sort them into real and silly words.
Buried treasure- similar concept as above, both of these games relate well to the phonics screening assessment.
Phonics flashcards- to practise rapid recall of phoneme, diagraphs and triagraphs.
High frequency words flashcards- to practise rapid recall, as well stating the words aloud for the children to practise spelling correctly.
Again Buried treasure and picnic on pluto are the most effective games for sounding out. The children have also played these games in class and really enjoy them.
Phonics flashcards- to practise rapid recall of phoneme, diagraphs and triagraphs. Then saying the sounds aloud for children to write down to apply this knowledge.
Maths for year one and two (number bonds)
May need to accept using flash one to play this:
addition number bonds within 10 and within 20, to improve rapid recall. Children have played this game in class and understand how to play this game well.
Children can also play a game with paper and a pencil. This is where they are timed for one minute and they list all the number bonds they can think of to make ten. They get a point for every calculation so this game can then be repeated to beat their score.
For year one and two maths (money):
Practise sorting coin together. Start by sorting all the coins by colour (one bronze pile, one silver pile and then one gold pile). Together then order the coins by value, knowing that the bronze coins having the least value, the silver coins have more value and the gold coins have the highest value.
Games to do with money:
Telling the time
Draw attention to digital and analogue clocks at home- talk about the big and little hands and what they represent. Talk about o’clock together looking at where the big hands always is.
.Number flashcards to 20.
.Show cards to improve rapid recall of numbers.
.Children can then sequence these number into the correct order.
.Children can also practise their number formation using the cards ensuring that their numbers are facing the correct way (as they do this it can help to say aloud the thought process, such as 3- I start at the top and go around and then around again).
For reception maths discuss the days of the week together. Practise saying what day it is in the morning and what day came before that. Then discuss what will the day be tomorrow.
